Bedford Park, London – Family Courtyard

The brief for this unusually shaped garden was to create dedicated areas for all the family, filled with abundant planting. We have used every inch of the space, but it still feels light, airy and uncluttered. The centrepiece is a bespoke pergola with a comfy hanging chair suspended over paving and low-level shade tolerant plants.

The hanging chair can be unhooked, and a swing attached instead. In another unused corner we designed and installed an L-shaped oak clad kitchen complete with cooking hob and gas barbeque. A matching oak clad storage unit fills a nook and is perfect for storage of garden tools and the parasol.

There are two seating areas, one for lounging and a second for dining. The garden feels very private due to the addition of pleached screening Hornbeam trees and a pair of multi-stemmed Amelanchier shrubs. An espaliered crab-apple tree offers Spring blossom and Autumn fruit.

The planting is designed with yearlong interest and looks pretty against the soft painted tones of the fencing and trellis.
