Small Spaces

Some of my favourite gardens have been small ones. A compact urban space demands a different kind of thinking, every decision is visible, every plant earns its place, and the relationship between space, light, and enclosure has to be exactly right.

Plants should earn their keep offering interest across as many months as possible, working hard in every season. In a small garden there's nowhere to hide a plant that only performs for a fortnight in June.

Privacy is often the first thing my clients raise, and in urban gardens it's one of the most satisfying problems to solve, whether through thoughtfully placed trees, layered planting, or a well-designed screen that does its job without making the garden feel smaller.

I design front gardens as part of larger projects where the whole property benefits from being considered together, street to garden, front to back.
