Thame, Buckinghamshire – Walled Garden

We were delighted to work on this unique transformation of a Victorian walled kitchen garden into an almost entirely ornamental, traditional garden with a modern country style. The layout is simple with clearly defined areas framed by wide gravel paths, echoing the old wheelbarrow paths. The lawn was essential to make the garden feel softer and more like a conventional garden. We included two separate terraces giving ample room for guests.

A generous sized dining area and a lounge terrace, framed by roses, lavender and jasmine. There are key focal points, including a vast terracotta urn that is the centrepiece to the parterre style planting. Along the rear wall, a bronze sculpture of a dancing girl mimics the movements of the Apple cordons planted alongside. The new Victorian style greenhouse is a nostalgic nod to the history of the garden and forms the backdrop to most of the views into the garden.

“We cannot recommend Joanna highly enough . Her attention to detail in all aspects of our project was exceptional. We converted some barns and garages into a home which left the surrounding area in quite a mess. The transformation is amazing, giving us several different beautiful areas of garden and we are thrilled with the result. We had little idea of what was possible, but Joanna listened to our brief and came up with some wonderful ideas guiding us through the whole process from beginning to end. We really enjoyed working with Joanna and wish her well in all her future projects.” M.A. & J.A.
